SEO is something that you’ve probably seen us writing about a lot here at Clockpunk Studios, but you may still not know exactly what it is, or why you should care about it.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and to put it simply, SEO describes any of a wide variety of tools that are used to make it easier and more likely for search engines to find your website. These tools range from well-written original content that incorporates keywords, to meta-data like page titles and URLs, and beyond.
SEO tactics are constantly changing. In the olden days of the Internet, many people would simply dump a bunch of keywords into a pile at the bottom of their page, and then change the font color of those keywords to match the background, making them effectively invisible. The days when tactics as crude as those had any effectiveness at all, though, are long past.
Search engines like Google, Bing, etc. are constantly updating their algorithms to ensure that they return the best and most relevant search results for their users. That means that SEO tactics have to stay ahead of the curve in order to help ensure that your website gets seen. In today’s SEO market there’s a saying that “content is king,” which means that just dumping in keywords is no longer enough to cut it. Search engines today look for quality, well-written content that provides real value to the reader.
In my day job, I’m a freelance writer, and a lot of the work I do is corporate SEO work. Companies hire marketing firms to improve their search engine rankings, and in turn those firms contract with freelancers like me to produce written content that makes their website more appealing to search engines. Blogs are one of the best ways to improve your SEO, as websites with blogs average over 400% more indexed pages that static websites. And since blogging content is all visible to search engines, it’s a great way to organically work in keywords to help potential readers find your site.
So when you see us talking about the importance of SEO or saying that something is SEO-friendly, what we mean is, basically, “how easy is it for people to find your website?” While content may be king in SEO circles, there’s a lot more that goes into SEO than just the written content of your website. That’s why, here at Clockpunk Studios, we make it a point to make all of our websites SEO-friendly, from search engine visibility to the unseen metadata that goes into each page. We want your website to look great, and be user-friendly, but we also know that no matter how good your website looks, it doesn’t matter if nobody sees it. That’s where our SEO-friendly practices come in!
